Custom Orthotics and Prosthetics
The Intrepid Dynamic Exoskeletal Orthosis (IDEO) brace is a custom, energy-storing carbon fiber orthosis designed to improve gait, stability, and function. This will provide an overview of the IDEO brace and how it works. Originally designed for active duty military.
The IDEO brace is a custom energy-storing orthosis design meant to improve gait, stability, and function after a lower-limb injury or limb salvage. It can address much of the pain, instability, and weakness of compromised lower limbs, especially those with articular surface damage.
The device is composed of a patellar tendon-bearing ground reaction anterior shell with a posterior cuff incorporating micro adjustability connected by a rigid carbon fiber modular spring system to a molded foot plate. The carbon fiber springs are energy-storing based on the user activity level and body weight. The foot plate portion slides under the affected foot and the rest of the brace attaches to the supporting limb. The IDEO brace is adjustable and is designed to improve the wearer's mobility and independence. It's often used in conjunction with a rehabilitation program, which has been shown to improve functional performance.
The IDEO brace is particularly beneficial for individuals who have experienced a lower-extremity injury or undergone limb salvage. It has been found to decrease the desire for a delayed amputation and permit higher levels of activity.
